I dont know if you can call it Inking or not but has anyone taken a drawing they have made, scanned it into Photoshop or some similar program and then colored it or Inked it from there?

I have had photoshop CS2 for some time now and i must say the program never really shined until i started doing this. Its truly AMAZING what your drawings can come out to be. Ive never made something from complete scratch that i looked at and went "OMG that looks sick" after i colored it.

I must say you NEED to be good with the program before you can do this. You need to know your brushes and you need to know the differnt tools. I think ive used every single tool in Photoshop doing my latest artwork (that ill post soon). It DOES take alot of time, ive been working on my cover for two days and its still not half done. IT does take alot of minor details to accomplish, photo shop isnt the program that you can go and do something huge and make it look good without going into detail every way you can. It takes alot of zooming and undoing etc... Along with that your drawing is just something to look at, half the time if find my self not using it as a guide, and it will change.

However doing this has a AMAZING outcome to it. My drawings have extreme detail in them like never before. Alot of the errors i make during my drawing process are vanquished. Honestly i just took one of my favorite drawings that ive done and made it look like utter crap by doing this. :)

Yea Ive heard that coloring/inking is great in photoshop. I would suggest you get a wacom board if you havent already. It makes the job a lot faster and have a more realistic feel than point and clicking on a mouse.

Personally I say photoshop is cheating and that the only thing photoshop is good for is paint. But hey to each their own.

I've heard coloring with Adobe Illustrator is much better than coloring with Adobe Photoshop.

Illustrator has tools and specifics for artists built in where Photoshop doesn't.

As for Barquiel saying that using PS is cheating:
Then you'd be surprised to hear that around 75% of the colorists in major comic companies use the computer to aid their color work

Ive been looking for a wacom board but they are pricy and im not really good at using them...However the point and click thing is easy once you get a hold of it but its alot more time consuming then doing it by hand.

Also above it right, alot of people do it on computers now a days (not necasarly photoshop per say) but they do it. There are rare people that still do it by hand and such and to tell the truth their work is just truly amazing, its not as effeicent as say a person that has been in photoshop for years. (I havent done this in photoshop so thats why its taking time for me :) )

I have illistrator too, and ive been told to use it for my 3d stuff, but i just dont like it when im so used to photoshop. I mean it took me almost a year to learn photoshop and now im really compfortable with it. Illistrator is a GREAT program though.

Hey I am new at the art thing, but I have to admit...photoshop kicks ass. I kind of thought it was cheating taking away from the artist creativty. But in all honesty its the way you look at. I mean I look at animation as an art form and they use computers and put a hell of lot time into making them, so why not use it? Here is a drawing I did and playing around with coloring in Photoshop. In particular the gradiient in the Apache skin tone in the lower right I really like!

Dude...it was real simple too... use the wand toll to select the area and if you want to select multiple areas press CTRL and the click the areas with the wand tool. Then use your gradient tool....select color. Usually dark to light and then drag. Really easy. Also if you want to see what people can do with Adobe photoshop or illlustrator, goto YouTube and type in Speed Drawing... reallly sick!!!

When i first used photoshop i loved the wan tool and now i hate it lol. I just find it easier abd better to outline something with the lasso tool instead.

Im going to check that out now, mine is like 2/3's done. I still need to do a bit of stuff.

If you need to ink digitally, try to use Illustrator. It is easier to work with the vector tools in that program. I personally use Photoshop and the general consensus on inking in PS is to use a wacom or get good at using the pen tool. Make sure all your line are scanned in at 300 dpi minimum and then either ink with a size 1 hard brush on a separate layer, the use color holds to get line weights after. Or use the pen tool.

Using Illustrator is really nice cause it spits your inks out as vector and you can resize those to whatever you want without losing quality. You can then import those inks to PS and color those up. Alternatively, using the pen tool in PS can allow you to make vectors as well.

Not to be a turd, but the ease of use and speed with which digital inking is associated with makes traditional inking less and less attractive.

Also, if your pencils are clean, you can just adjust levels in PS and paint right then and there. None of the stuff Cary Nord did in Conan was inked for some time.

Manga Studio is killer for inking. I just started working with it last weekend and I'm really impressed. It is also cheap, $50 for the Debut version.

I can't break out forever
