It occurs to me that it might be faster if, instead of waiting for Jim Lee to pencil each issue, Frank Miller just went door to door to every DC fan's house and punched them each in the face.

| Frank Miller needs to be barred from writing comics except Sin City. Because that's apparently that style of writing is the only way he knows how to write now. |

Well that's a very silly thing to say Buddy. Frank Miller has always been a hit or miss writer, and as of late it's more miss than hit (you can't take away my love for Robocop 2!). But he is the man solely responsible for making the Dark Knight the character he is today. He was the one that made Batman dark and really freaking cool. Dark Knight Returns is still one of, if not THE definitive Batman story. Now, since then he has done strikes back and All Star, but that doesn't take away from his talent. I mean, look at his credentials: Daredevil, 300, Dark Knight, Sin City. The man has done enough to warrant attention. Daredevil under his pen was one of the better runs in comics. Ever. That being said, he has been known to experiment with character, sometimes not in a way people like.
All Star Batman and Robin sucks more than Michael Bolton, or Paul McCartney singing "Freedom" but Sin City is NOT the only thing he can write. I say keep writing, that way he can add a few more 'hits' to his list. |

Oh, I'm not denying Frank Miller had talent. Willie Mays had talent, but I wouldn't sign him to play centerfield for my team tomorrow. While Mays is the victim of the natural aging process, Miller... just lost it. What has he written since 300 that hasn't been garbage? Maybe one of those Sin City one-shots full of short stories?
Actually, ASSBAR might not be bad if it were a Sin City story. If, instead of Bruce Wayne being a psychopath reveling in crippling attempted rapists and locking a kid in a cave where he's expected in eat rats, it was Marv or Dwight or some other character he made up on his own, I might accept it, but instead it just seems like Miller is intentionally going out of his way to piss people off.
Oh, and let's not overlook the limited edition cover that must have taken Miller all of 40 seconds to draw
Between this and Dark Knight Strikes Back, I'm convinced Frank Miller's sees his comic career now as nothing more than a huge practical joke. Seriously, doesn't this all seem like something Andy Kaufman would do? |

It's funny that so few people actually manage to catch what Frank Miller is doing in ASB&R. It's supposed to be a parody. It's basically Frank Miller making fun of the "grim n' gritty" trend that he helped start in the 80s. Seriously, I'm not making this up. I have this confirmed by multiple sources. So, the joke's on you, fanboys. |

He may be parodying himself, but Date Movie was a parody of... well, date movies and Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood was a parody of gang movies. Parody is an easy excuse for Miller to use to justify his crappy story. "Ha ha, you don't get it because I'm Frank Miller and I'm smarter than you." Even if you accept that he's writing a purposely over-the-top Batman story, the story is poorly constructed garbage. Parody and satire are not easy forms of comedy to write and Miller is drowning in his own excess.
Parody also is obvious. No one rents Top Secret or Airplane! or I'm Gonna Get You Sucka expecting a serious spy/disaster/action film. ASSBAR is not being sold as a comedy book, there's no nudge and wink to the audience. It's just Miller amusing himself by seeing how much crap he can shovel and still get DC to cut him fat checks for it.
Telling us this story is parody is nothing more than spin. You might as well tell me Norbit bombed at the box office because audiences couldn't grasp the subtle political undertones. |

Hey hey hey... let's not bring Norbit into this.
Let's just all agree that ASBMAR that is completely off the chain, and Frank Miller is also completely off the chain.
Happy now? |

Your avatar greatly amuses me, Abe.
Anyway, if we take the "ha ha it's a joke, dontchagetit?" argument as fact, I still think DC did a better job making fun of "dark" comics during "KnightQuest: The Crusade". Miller's a day late and a dollar short. |

Why parody grim n' gritty comics? 1980's comics are some of the best comics ever written... I personally hate modern writing with its endless barrage of pseudo-intellectual parody. Give me an issue of Daredevil from 1984 where he beats up a coke head and questions whether or not he's a good guy any day. I'll sooner read that than the latest Morrison Batman issue, with Batman using British slang and acting unbelievably out of character.
The question is: Why does Morrison get a pass while writing Batman as a cockney Brit, but Frank Miller gets bashed? |

And also, just for clairification, I'm not saying one thing or another about Miller's previous books, I just think the writing on this paticular book is horrible.

That's true. I shouldn't use absolutes, they get you into trouble. I should have said that he was one of the people that shifted comics from the bright, wish-fulfillment comics of the 70's, into the darker toned comics that have dominated the market since.
I love Denny O'Neil and Neil Adams' work. Even though Neil Adams is a dick. |

| DC was like that in the 70's because of editorial, not because of the writers or artists, if Frank Miller had gone to DC heads in 75 the Dark Knight returns would have starred Adam West |

I drew Adam West punching the Goddammed Batman in the face.
This would be a parody DKR with Adam West in the lead role. |
