| Actually, American Born Chinese, Fun Home, and the Tickling were well read and reviewed books. Not everything in comics needs to be dressed up in tights and a cape. |

This is exactly the response I expected, I don't like the poorly drawn deeply personal run on indie crap that's been nominated, so I get the acusation of not liking them because there not capes & tights... obviously that's the case. American Born Chinese was not good, it started okay, but I quickly lost interest, I was later told it's becasue I'm not American Born Chinsese, which is another argument entirely, Fun Home, the autobiographical tale of a gal retoring a house while telling tales of her possibly gay dad, it was boring, but at least the art was bad, i only got about halfway through, the tickling, I never saw on a store shelf or even heard of so it might be really good, but not just because it was well read & reviewed, every book in the world was well read & reviewed by somebody. How about for the nominations, somethings on there like, the quiter, flight, 1001 nights of snowfall, robot, sloth, pride of bahgdad, life & times of Scrooge McDuck, the abandoned, the king, nothing left to lose... I'm pretty sure that most of these aren't eligible for these nominations, which is undoubtedly the first thing you'll go after to try to disprove my opinion. comics don't need caped & tights to be good, yes that is what I prefer, I would rather read Green Lanterns latest adventure than read about the emo kid/closeted lesbian/misunderstood daughter who just can't get the girl/mom died/wants to start a band/ |

Actually, you make a few really good points. Nominations are always inherently flawed because they are completely democratic, but who wants to look at a ballot with 5000 choices. If you look at the nominating committee, they may be able to determine their biases. Off the top of my head Quiter, Flight 3, 1001 nights of snowfall, Pride of Bahgdad, and the Abandoned appear to be qualifiable nominations and really great books. The Eisner Awards are no different than the Oscars. Some of their choices have me scratching my head. That's why I wanted people to add their suggestions for possible missed nominees.
One thing I hadn't commented on was the fact that the nominations had quite a few nominations from independent companies. The other interesting thing to see was manga titles seemed well represented in some of the categories. It would be good to see manga readers pick up a non-manga nominated title to see what the competition is and comic readers pick up a manga title. With comic book artists and writers writing/drawing for Tokyopop, the lines between the two could be blurring.
Dr. Noah Drake.....I apologize for assuming that you were only talking about tights/capes exclusions from the list. I haven't seen the Doctor so mad since Jesse took his girl back. That was not my intent.

Before I read the nominees, I pretty much assumed American Born Chinese, Pride of Baghdad, 1001 Nights of Snowfall, and two other books duking it out for 4th and 5th place. I am shocked to see I only got one right. Snowfall was nominated for best compilation, but that seems like a ripoff to me, like refusing to nominate a documentary for best picture because there's already a best documentary Oscar.
Wasn't Iron West eligible for this year? Maybe not the "best" GN of the year, but definitely one of the most enjoyable.
Hee hee hee... Jesse took his girl back... |
