52 comes out in trade starting next month. They are printing it out sequentially without the extras. Does it make more sense to split the trades out this way? Would it be better to have the different story archs split out individually?

Something we had discussed in the office quite a bit during the middle of the run of 52 was that the trades had not started coming out sooner. I was the only person there who was actually up on the title. Most people had missed several weeks worth of issues and decided that they were too far behind to catch up. I think DC could have retained more customers on the back end if they had published trades every 6 to 8 issues.

However, now that they are publishing them I am glad they are not breaking up the comics into their individual arcs. Those arcs were designed to intertwine with the other arcs. Splitting them up disrupts flow, pacing, and juxtaposition, not to mention the 'real-time' timeline DC was attempting and the fact that some stories got significantly more time to develop than others. To split them up would do the book a great injustice.

Though I am hoping that in subsequent reprints of the trades that they will include the extras I.E. History of the DCU and Origin Stories. I thought that those were incredibly useful to those who don't read DC comics religiously. Lets face it, this book was not meant for those who don't know DC history. Quite a few of the characters are obscure to say the least. Which, I suppose, is the whole point of excluding the Big Three. It's a way of saying, "Hey, heres a universe rich in history and characters. Meet the Question, or Animal Man. They're rad to the point of being too awesome for your tiny brains to understand!"

I think the History of the DCU and Origins stories would work out well separately like the Official Marvel Handbook or the old DCU guidebooks. I'm holding out for Absolute 52.

Absolute 52 would weigh 52 pounds!! I love the idea but I hate the idea of needing a forklift to read it. I think the history should be a prestige format special to match my others and that the origins would make a nice little trade too. As for 52 proper. Print it like I read it.

Beware your fears made into light
Let those who try to stop what's right,
Burn like his power... Sinestro's might!

They could split up the volumes like Infinite Crisis or print it out in volumes like Absolute Sandman.

Absolute Infinite Crisis has the story and a compendium. One nice package with two books in it. Also, Calvin and Hobbes did a complete edition that was split into two books packaged in one slip case.

The Absolute CoIE source book is great, but for absolute 52 I'd have to cash in the equity on my home.
