We discussed sketching animals at the zoo on Monday. I've got some info for those interested.

Normal hours are 7am to 2pm (4pm on weekends) $14 admission

They have special friday night hours, 6pm-9pm for only $4 but not all the zoo will be open.

I copied the following from the zoo's website.
Because some of our animal will be resting in the evenings, not all zoo trails will be open – but look for some of your favorites including:

* Elephant – from the new viewing area
* giraffe & watusi cattle
* zebra
* flamingo
* otter
* orangutans till 7 p.m.
* Monkey Village till 7:30 p.m.
* Arizona Trail will be open all evening

What say the group? Want to try the friday night thing? I am free anytime.

the friday night thing sounds good because its cheaper, but I wanna see the lions and tigers :(

I dunno...maybe we should just go at 7 in the morning so it will be cool and the animals will be out?

That's okay Dani. We didn't talk about it at the meeting monday anyway. Perhaps the next friday after that, the 27th of June?

Man I know, this heat (>_<) and it's just getting started!

There is still the Zoo's cheap friday evening event...

I suppose we could sketch people at a mall.

Have you ever taken a sketchbook to an art museum and done sketch copies of your favorite paintings? I've done that before. The Phoenix art museum has a free day...let me check when...

okay it looks like evenings only,
first friday of the month 6-10pm
every tuesday evening 3-9pm
(of course that doesn't include special exhibitions)

btw, this exhibition looks cool but it's not till Nov.

'course it's not the same as drawing elephants and tigers. :-(

any of these options interest the group?

At the spur of the moment, I went to the Zoo this morning by myself. From 7:00am to 9:00am it's actually not bad, heat-wise. Once it hits 9 though, it's a rapid accent to hellish temps. Here's some pics and sketches I did.

Verdict: as long as it's cool-ish and you stay in the shade, I really enjoyed it. But considering the $14 entrance fee, it might be better to wait till the fall to get your money's worth. I suppose it depends on how long you intend to stay there.
