What does everyone think the R.I.P. stands for? There is a possibility it does not stand for Rest In Peace. I was thinking... When Captain America died, it was a surprise. When Creed died, it was pretty much a surprise. I'm not sure about Elektra because I didn't read that series, but I'm pretty sure that was a surprise too. What I am getting at here is that DC is announcing R.I.P. and promoting it all over the place! If Batman were to die, wouldn't they rather it be a surprise?

DC has made it pretty clear that RIP does not mean the death of Batman or Bruce Wayne, but the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman.  As a comparison, the Death of Superman was well known months before it happened.

Hey Spazdog, where are you getting your facts on this? As far as I have read, it is still pretty vague on what R.I.P. means and what is going to happen to Batman. Do you have some kind of inside info nobody else does? Cite where you think Bruce Wayne is not going to be Batman!!

Well I dont know if Im correct so pls dont quote me either. But didn't Bane break Batmans back and either paralized him for life or out right killed him..And yea Eleckras (sp?) death for a surprize becuase the writer wrote the script and the editors were trying to not publish it but becuase of the times it was published and yes people were crazy shocked...source the writer himself in a behind the scenes vid some where.

Thanks for the info on Elektra!

I agree with atticgnome. As far as I have read there have been no implications that Bruce is hanging up his Bat-cape. Unless I missed something...

Batman's back breaking was done in KnightFall.  He turned the mantel over to Azreal who was a vengeful vigilatante.  During KnightQuest, Bruce goes overseas to heal and to rediscover himself.  In KnightsEnd, Bruce comes back into town to reclaim the mantel of the Batman.  All of these are available in trade paperback and readily available at most fine comic book stores.  Bruce or the Batman were not killed during this series, but it took him a while to recover.

Grant Morrison talking about Batman R.I.P. at NYCC this winter.  There have been rumors that Batman would die and be elevated to a New God.  The rumors lasted a week until DC came back to say that it would not happen and that it was crazy talk.  In the interview I saw, Grant said that RIP is the psychological breakdown of Batman and the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman.

Okay, so it's been a few months - what's everyone thinking of it now?

I have to say I really don't like the idea of Bruce not being Batman anymore - though on the other hand, why not? I've always said comic characters need to grow and change more.  It would be nice to give the Bat a break without actually having to kill him off.  Let him have a life and be happy for a while.  Doubt it's going to happen though.   I'm not sure if I can't wait for the end of this story arc or not...
