What do people want the Art Club to be? As it stands now, a few people (about 3~5) bring their sketchbooks and chat/draw the night away. I usually bring an artbook or comic that I'm into and pass it around the group. That's better than nothing, and I know for me, I want (or even need) to be around other creative people for inspiration and to keep my spirits up. I'd like a little more though. And, at the risk of putting words in her mouth, I think Dani does too. We need more members and to keep those who have been before coming back. Hmm...membership should likely be a separate topic. After all, we could have a lot of people and still just chat and sketch. So let's keep this topic about what goes on at art club and what activities we could add if any. (Naturally this does tie into membership as people might be more willing to show up if they know they are going to miss out on something...but I am rambling aren't I?) An activity fund becomes an issue but there are many things that don't cost a dime. In any case, I do have a few ideas for raising money. ...More on this later, I just remembered I have to make a flyer for my dad by 5pm. Gotta run! |

At the moment Im just glad we *have* members. However, Im hoping with the consignment deals we are doing and by just spreading the word, more people will come.
As for things to do, I was thinking maybe doing a one-week-a-month theme or something where we have a theme that everyone needs to draw, or a comic page, or whatever. Perhaps do a draw-in-THIS-style type of thing to help improve art in other areas. If we could do something that would inspire, or help people improve their art that would be awesome! But im not exactly sure what yall think or wanna do |

True, true... I should go through my old work from school and find somethings. I know I have an insane amount of life drawings on newsprint. Think those would be acceptable? One thing that really sucks about art going digital is that there no longer any physical remains of the work. A printout, even a good one, is nothing compared to paint on canvas, (or ink on board). I keep telling myself I need to get back to the brush, but when it comes down to it--I can't give up my multiple UNDOs. We are totally on the same vibe here, great ideas Dani. There's a cool exercise, I can't remember where I got it from but it starts with one person making page one of a comic, then also doing the first panel of page two. Another person takes up the story, changing it however he wants as long as he integrates the first panel that the previous artist did, into his continuation of the comic. This 2nd person also makes panel one of the third page of the comic, and hands it off to yet another artist who finishes page three however he wants, and so it repeats, each page adding to a bizarre comic book story that has a vague connection among the differing pages due to the linking panel first panel of each page. Does that make sense? Oh and another idea might be to pick a superhero or villain with a really lame costume and give everyone a week to design a cooler-looking character. I really love seeing different artists' take on the same concept. I remember a bunch of artists around the web all submitting drawings for a new costume for batgirl a few years ago. |

I like all of your ideas they all some great. Altho Life drawing might be a bothersome since some people might not know what it is plus their good be a problem with models. Personally I use my self as a model when I need a ref for a drawing Im doing but thats just me. Anyway I like the artist jam you were talking about when creating a comic book but I think with only a few hours it might be hard to pull off well.
I also like the idea of choseing a character and changeing their costume. I think that would be really easy to pull off and would be an interesting challenge. But here is my two cents.
You could also do a "Artist Challenge" which means their is a subject, character, emotion, scene that the artist has to pull off on their own with no ref's,comics, or any out side help other than their mind. You could do this in two ways, one would be you have a week to draw this, or you could do it "In house" during club hours.
I also have a artist game that I have not been able to try out yet due to the fact that all my artist friends are extermely lazy and have moved away to other states. Its where your moves are panel to panel and you use a 6 sided die or a 20 sided die to determine how powerfull your hits, power move in that scene would be. You draw your own heroe or villian (Your choice but it dosent matter they all fight each other anyway) You pick your powers and you can only chose 2 when you start. If you when the epic fight you get to pick one more or enhcance one you already have. You can think of it as a really Random VS comic book. However its very open ended you can do what you want but you do have Endurance and once the endurance runs out you lose the comic fight.
Its very quick and In my book very fun. Hell if people end up likeing it you could run Turnnies for it. |
