Breakdown Philly for us. How does it differ from other superhero team books.

Philly's the story of heroes in training, like secondary heroes. All the big heroes are in New York, like Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four. They're kind of second rate guys trying to learn the ropes. They work with the police. They're kind of like the Hardy Boys.

What sets Philly apart is the investigations they do. It's a detective thing. They don't just go in and beat people up, they go around it, check out the scene, ask questions... but they're kind of screw ups too. They'd rather just watch TV or go to a bar than fight some superbaddie.
How did you get this gig? Where did you meet Ryan McLelland?

Ryan was looking for an artist for another project, Wise Intelligence, on another website. I dropped him an email like "Hey, check out my stuff," but that's more of an indie kind of thing while I'm more of a superhero artist. He came back though and told me he had a superhero project, why don't we give it a shot, so we did a five page submission and sent it around. But we pretty much got to know each other all through the internet.

Do you prefer to draw a team book or a solo adventure?

I like to draw lots of different characters. Not to say I'm George Perez or anything, but the more I can draw the better. Variety is good.

Do you have any special connections to the City of Brotherly Love?

Well... actually... I've never really been there. I've known some people from Philadelphia... or at least one person... this really cool Philly girl. But other than that... I like cheesesteak sandwiches. Philadelphia cream cheese is delicious. If you're making a cheesecake, I highly recommend it.
You've been at previous Free Comic Book Days, but this is your first time with an actual published book to your credit. How is it different this year?

It's a huge difference. It's like you're finally part of it. You feel like a professional. Like you're "appearing"--you're a guy who draws comics instead of just a guy who wants to draw comics. It's huge for me.

What part of of Free Comic Book Day are you most looking forward to?

The fans. Kids wanting to get sketches. Drawing sketches for people. Talking to people and getting to know fans--even if they want to boo and throw rotten tomatoes--is great.
