We already have two different teams of Avengers, about a dozen permutations of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and some other supergroups I can't even think of, so why do we need Omega Flight?
Well, Canada is its own country – can’t it have its own superhero team? I think the FF, Avengers and X-men are busy enough in the U.S. Besides, the stuff that Clairemont and Byrne came up with is way too cool to leave untouched. Guardian’s costume is awesome and Sasquatch can hold his own with the freakin’ Hulk! And the origins of Omega come directly out of Civil War – so it’s natural to get into these stories up north.
With all due respect to Beta Ray Bill, Arachne, and... um, the bald guy who absorbed all those powers and killed Alpha Flight, this book boast a less-than-all-star cast of characters. What was your reaction when you were told you were going to be drawing a book where Captain America's knockoff would be the biggest name?
To be honest, I’m much more of an old-school Alpha Flight fan, but with the current continuity, it’s a bit “healthier” to start fresh with this storyline and play with a different bunch of characters. I’ve always rooted for underdogs and we certainly have some in this group.
Does working primarily with "fringe" characters leave you guys more freedom and flexibility in your stories? What kinds of things can you do with Sasquatch that you couldn't do with Thing or Colossus?
Yes, you get more “freedom” with “fringe” characters – as much freedom as you get borrowing somebody else’s money. It’s how you play the game that counts. Sasquatch has a bit more “inner” problems than Colossus or even The Thing. His powers come from somewhere spooky and it doesn’t come without a price. Sasquatch has some REALLY cool stories yet to be told. Can’t wait.
Which of the characters is your favorite to draw?
Probably Sasquatch. I really like my new Talisman costume and Guardian is always great, but there’s nothing like drawing a 10 foot tall fur ball that can kick major butt! Oh, I should mention, there’s a bird I’ve been drawing that I’m loving. Yes, I said a bird. You got a problem with that?
If I did, I'd keep it to myself for now. They've found ways to bring back Guardian, Sasquatch, and Shaman in a round about way. How long before we get Puck back?
Who said Shaman’s back? I think you got some bad info, my friend. And Guardian isn’t really Guardian now, is he? Would I love to see Puck back some how – bet you’re a$$.
Why aren't there more super agile, hairy dwarves wearing hoodies in comics today?
What’s a hoodie? Is that some gang slang? Are you startin’?!
How is it different drawing a book when your writer is an accomplished artist in his own right? Are his scripts easier to draw or do you find him telling you how he'd do it?
Mike’s as easy as they come. As a professional, I mean. I love working with him again. This is one of many projects that was kept under wraps until the end of Civil War, yet some of the roster slipped out. How difficult was it to work on a secret project without spilling the beans?
Well, it’s a bit difficult, when I've got spies at the stores I buy stuff from! But no, it’s not tough. I answer what I want to and only what I want to. I was happy people were asking again and again and then getting some “answers”. It’s how we play now.
Originally this book was solicited as an ongoing series. Now it's a five-issue miniseries. What happened? Any chances we'll see more Omega Flight elsewhere when this is done?
What happened? Depending on your point of view, Marvel either got scared and was backing off the book or they thought this might be another way to get some publicity for the book. I’m a glass half full kinda guy, so I’m thinking its part of the genius of “The House”. |
