Atomic Comics - First off we have to say that after reading your Sif One-Shot we are really excited to get more of Kelly Sue writing for Marvel!
Kelly Sue DeConnick - Hey, thanks so much. You and me both, man.
AC - Rescue is focusing on the character of Pepper Potts and her hi-tech suit of armor. What can we expect from this series?
KSD - Alas, it’s a one-shot, not a series. That said, you can expect some ’splotions and armored action but also a little time in Pepper’s head. Specifically, she’s figuring out whether or not she even wants to be RESCUE…and owning up to the fact that she hasn’t really dealt with the death of her husband.
AC - Did you find that living with the writer of Ironman helped a bit with writing characters from that sand box? How much plot idea bantering do you guys do while say, eating dinner, doing the laundry, doing the nasty?
KSD - I’m sure it helped-and I don’t particularly want to play down his influence; I mean, I’m Madame President of the Matt Fraction fan club, you know? But that said, we actually don’t talk plot all that much. I dunno how to explain it exactly. We’ll talk about specifics of the form—like, for instance, I find I’m really struggling with pacing. My natural tendency is to crowd the page with too many panels. So, I may talk to him about a particular sequence and he may suggest a way to combine panels or to cut one here or there. On rare occasions, he’ll pop his head in my office and ask me if I think a particular line of dialogue is too much or whatever. But his plotting process is…epic. It involves 4 white boards, masking tape and a gabillion index cards. It’s not the sort of thing that you just shoot the shit about, you know? And for me, that part of the process is so delicate…if I look directly at it, it disappears. I kind of have to catch it in the corner of my eye and write until it gets brave enough to step into the light.
Honestly, Alejandro Arbona has been my Obi-Wan, but in addition to him and Matt, I’ve talked to Ed Brubaker, Warren Ellis, Steve Niles, Brian Bendis, Kathryn Immonen, Kieron Gillen, Jen Van Meter…
(We save “doing the nasty” for our re-enactments of FINDING FORRESTER. I’m sure you understand.)
AC - Is this going to be an ongoing series?
KSD - Sadly, no.
AC - What other Marvel characters may be showing up in Rescue? Any juicy surprises we can “leak” to potential fans that come in the store?
KSD - Man…I think the preview blew the Happy reveal, so no.
AC - You and Matt live in Portland, as do many of the most prolific comic creators in the biz. What is it about Portland that attracts all the cool comic writers? Is it VooDoo Donuts?
KSD - There is actually a grand plan behind it all. I could tell you, but…well…you know how this sentence ends.
