Atomic Comics - Unlike some of the Marvel titles that have a ton of build up and lots of press leading into the first issue, Ultimate X has really been shrouded in secrecy. Not a whole lot has been leaked or spoken about other than one teaser image. Why so low key on this one?
Jeph Loeb - We liked the idea of expect the unexpected. The teaser campaign was super effective and people are talking about the book without having seen very much of it. Once it hits though we’re hopeful they will be as excited as we are.
Art Adams - And I like the idea of keeping this stuff unknown as close to printing as possible, I hate spoilers. I much rather be pleasantly suprised, and I hope the people who pick up Ultimate X will like it as much as we like working on it.
AC - Even with the Top-Secret teasers, fans have really been clamoring over who or what this book is about. Obviously there is a Wolverine-esq type character and a Hulk-ish kinda guy. What can fans expect going into issue #1?
JL - Something very different. The Ultimate Universe was once a place where things happened there that couldn’t happen in The Marvel U. Our target is to come back to that. Personally, I was very inspired by the way Bendis started Ultimate Spidey. It was a slow, deliberate character driven story. That’s what these first five will be.
AA - This is a new approach for me. This first issue’s overall tone is kind of sad and sweet and issue two is sad and scary, and issue three is scary and...well, you'll see.
AC - With two such celebrated creators, this book has to be a huge success! But enough of the butt-kissing, what’s it like to work together?
JL - Arthur is amazing. There’s NOTHING he can’t draw and draw well. These stories feel very personal to me and because of that Arthur is giving them a kind of touch I’ve not seen in his work. It’s really remarkable. Adding to that Peter Steigerwald and the Aspen Color boys are digitally inking the work so you really get to see every line of Arthur’s magic.
AA - I agree with everything Jeph said. HA! Working on this book has been one of the biggest challenges of my carreer. Jeph is asking me to draw stuff I would normally avoid and I feel that is pushing me to grow as an artist and while that can be scary, it can also be exciting. I think both Jeph and I both feel very connected to these characters. So please buy the book so Jeph and I can do lots more of them!
AC - Do you feel that by working in the Ultimate Universe you get a chance to take more risks with the characters and possibly break some of the conventions that fans have come to expect?
JL - Very much so. It’s one of the pleasures of working with these characters. It’s also unusual to try and keep to “DEAD IS DEAD.” ULTIMATUM was a devastating event. This is the aftermath. This is about hope.
AA - What Jeph said. This is a whole new deal. A bunch of these characters have been through hell. Some of them don't know it yet, but they've just stepped into hell.
AC - Even though this is a mini-series, do you think it, or the characters involved, have the potential to become an important part of the Ultimate Universe mythos?
JL - Hope so! Arthur certainly is illustrating them that way!
AA - I sure do hope so! I wanna draw more of this stuff!
AC - I have to ask are we going to ever see Ultimate Red Hulk?
JL - Let’s get through THIS Hulk first okay?
AA - I'm pushing for Red Godzilla, but for some reason the rest of the gang don't seem to think that's a very good idea. Maybe Red Fin Fang Foom?
AC - I’m thinking that Ultimate Red Hulk’s secret identity could be an owner of a comic book store in the South West. And he was exposed to some kind of “Atomic” radiation. What do you think? Who could possibly fit that bill?
JL - Do they have comic book stores in the South West? If they did, I’d bet they’d be run by the sexiest man alive.
AA - Jeph has a comic book store in the South West? I did not know that. |
