Atomic Comics - So working on Buffy Season 8 is a pretty cool gig. Did you get much input from the Whedon camp, or were you given free reign to play with the characters the way you wanted to?
Brad Meltzer - Joss is fully hands on this book -- and to be honest, that's the only reason I did it. There's nothing like working with creators you admire. And he's certainly one of mine.
AC - Going into your arc, we will finally learn the identity of Twilight correct?
BM - Yep. (Wait, I think we just found the one person who didn't know that)
AC - I don’t want to spoil anything, but there has been a small amount of controversy about the “potential” use of a character from another company’s book? Can you comment on that?
BM - At the risk of further ruining a well planned surprise, I think it's time to just let the story speak for itself. And that's really the only way it should ever be.
AC - How long do you plan on staying on Buffy and can you give us any hints on what we can expect from your Buffy run?
BM - Four issues. And as for hints, the big bad's identity is just one puzzle piece. There are bigger pieces out there.
AC - We’ve have been a huge fans of your comic work since first reading Identity Crisis. We’ve used that book to get many “non comics” people into comics. You took a bunch of superheroes and told a story that made it not matter that they had powers; it was just a great murder mystery. Do you feel it’s easier for you to do this with your novel writing background?
BM - I hope so. But for me, I actually never saw it as a mystery. I saw it as a big character piece -- but as Bill Watterson just said, the best part is how people see their own thing in the same work. Love that.
AC - After your work on Buffy is completed, what else can we expect to see from you comic-wise?
BM - For the first time in a long while, I have no idea. I'm focused far more right now on Heroes For My Son, my first nonfiction book, which comes out in May. [I’ve] been working on it for eight years now for my own sons. And yes, of course I've got some real life superheroes in there.
AC - So you’ve got a #1 NY Times Bestseller with the Book of Fate! How awesome is that? Are you an actual Freemason yourself? Or would you have to kill us to tell us?
BM - I'm not a Mason, though have enjoyed all my time with them. So can't kill you until people forget about this chat. But then... PS - the first chapter is free at www.bradmeltzer.com and I'm on facebook and twitter of course. |
