Atomic Comics - The words Brian Pulido and Horror go hand and hand these days. What started with Lady Death and Evil Ernie at Chaos! Comics turned into some great work like Mischief Night at Avatar and now onto your first Feature Release Movie “The Graves”! To that we have to say congratulations!
Brian Pulido - Thank you mighty Atomic!
AC - For the few people who don’t know about this movie, what can you tell us about it?
BP - The Graves, written & directed by yours truly, makes its U.S. debut as part of After Dark Film’s Horrorfest 4 on January 29th – February 4th.
The Graves is about two comic geek sisters (whose home shop is Atomic Comics – no lie!) whose visit to Skull City Mine turns into a mind bending fight for survival against menaces both human, and supernatural, stars Clare Grant (Masters of Horror), Jillian Murray (The Fun Park), Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects, Texas Chainsaw Massacre II), D. Randall Blythe (Screamer, Lamb of God), Shane Stevens, Patti Tindall (Death of a Ghost Hunter) and Tony Todd (24, Candyman).
We got an “R” rating for strong bloody violence, which I’m proud of.
AC - What about the transition from comics to film making? What were some of the biggest hurdles?
BP - In comics, you don’t have a budget when you tell a story. You can blow up the universe on Page 1, panel 1. With a movie, you need to conscious of the costs of your story. I mean, maybe the Transformers writers don’t need to worry, but I did. Happily, our budget for blood was very good.
AC - Writing wise, how much of a difference is it working on a movie script to working on a comic script, other than the length of course?
BP - Man, they are almost the opposite of comics in some ways. With comics there is always an expository moment or seven where you have to re-cap stuff for new readers. With screenplays, it is very spare and surgically precise. People will actually perform your words so it is important for your words to sound like a person would actually say them!
AC - As a side note I have to ask, we visited www.brianpulido.com recently and I am curious why you have a picture of yourself holding a giant bazooka on the main page?
BP - Okay, you got me. I’m a giant bazooka man. I’m secretly a 90’s super hero comic nerd. Cable is my favorite. That picture confirms it. No, actually that’s me holding a RED ONE camera, which we used to shoot The Graves.
AC - You have already accomplished so much, what is next for Brian Pulido? Another movie on the way? Maybe a sitcom starring Mike Malve and Gary Coleman (“whachoo talkin’ about Malve!”)? Maybe you should just take over the Tonight Show?
BP - My next movie is a horror film (surprise) called Damnation. It’s about a family of con artists performing fake exorcisms and screwing small town folks out of money. When they are called to exorcise a man in isolated Hillsdale, Arizona, they unleash a demon horde. Good times are had by all.
AC - As a fan of your work I would really like to know if we are going to see some regular comic work again any time soon?
BP - I am hard at work on the upcoming, all new Lady Death monthly series. It’s been a while since new LD comics. We aim to please. This new monthly will be brutal and horrific. |
