Hey again everyone. It’s John at Metro actually meeting deadline this week. No really huge titles came out this week, but no really bad books came out either. I don’t think that I read a book that I really didn’t like. Next week, on the other hand, will be huge and you can expect me to babble endlessly over World War 3 and Mighty Avengers #2. In the meantime, here’s your weekly bombardment of new books from this geek’s perspective.

52 Week 49: Man, this book keeps on getting better and better. I can’t wait for next week and all the extra books. World War 3 is gonna be like getting 54 issues of 52 in one week. Black Adam is going berserk. Will Magnus is off his meds and crazy too and God only knows what Skeets has been up to but I hope Animal Man makes it back before Black Adam decides that North America needs to be leveled. Another A+ for Giffen and Company. Paul Dini has some big shoes to fill with Countdown.

All Star Superman #7: In one more issue, All Star Supes laps All Star Batman. Grant Morrision’s take on Bizarro World is awesome. It’s like the Borg short bus. Frank Quietly might be a bit of a slowpoke as an artist, but the finished product is completely worth the wait. A+

New Avengers #29: This has the makings of a great book, but I still like Mighty Avengers a lot more. Yu is a good artist, but I don’t think he’s Avengers material. Doc Strange really unloads on the Mighty Avengers in this issue, which is awesome, and Iron Fist is his regular awesome self. I still feel there need to be a more cohesive stortytelling approach. B

Blade #8: Why has Blade become Aquaman of the vampire hunting world? I love Howard Chaykin’s art on this book and I wish I could live in his world where all men wear awesome hats still. Wishful thinking on my part, I know. Still this book is underrated and deserves your attention. A

Clive Barker’s Great and Secret Show #11: If you are reading The Dark Tower, you should give this a try too. It has been one of the most faithful adaptations of any book I have ever read. I have read this book twice but still can’t put down the issues of this every month. B

Fables #60: I dare anyone to show me a bad issue of this book. Ever. It does not happen. A+

Gen 13 #7: This issue takes a very Manga-esque approach as Fairchild fights for her life in a Savage Land-like jungle full of big dinosaurss and tigers and stuff. Grunge is... well, Grunge, and the rest of the team has to deal with him. B

Ghost Rider #10: Another fast read issue. I want more words in this book. I have had sneezes that lasted longer. It was a good issue, just so short. I love the stupid, stupid zombies. C

Green Arrow #73: Ollie’s been funding the Outsiders and the people have demanded a recount election. Will Ollie lose his mayoral status? Connor’s back and so is Merlyn (the archer not the wizard). The other big surprise guest is also there to make Ollie’s life substantially more complicated. Life has to get better, because it can’t get much worse. A

Green Lantern Corps #11: This book is so awesome. Imagine if "The Shield" and " Rescue Me" had Power Rings. Guy Gardner has trouble with some of the new recruits and Kilowog may be going crazy. Abin Sur had a secret and how will the new corps be affected by the upcoming rise of the Sinestro Corps? A

Grifter/Midnighter #2: I am so confused? Are they crazy or is it real? Aliens and terrorists and... um... since when has Grifter been Super-Xavier level psionic? C with room for adjustment as the series clears up more questions.

Iron Man #16: I still don’t like Tony and he’s getting worse. It’s like SHIELD has become a walking (floating?) advertisement for Stark Industries. C

JLA Classified #37: "Kid Amazo" kicks off with a bang and leaves me wondering why this story, which has been floating around the DC offices for years, wasn’t published earlier. Amazo’s cyborg existentailst bouncing ro-baby boy is awesome. How come I never wake up and find out my dad was a superduper poser-stealing robot? A+

Loners #1: Why aren’t all Marvel books this much fun? C.B. Cebluski strikes gold with The Loners and I hope this book becomes an ongoing. A bunch of twenty- somethings form a support group to try and lick their superheroing habit. I am so happy to see Darkhawk back. He was one of my favorite characters when I was growing up. This book is going to be a must read for older marvel fans who remember the nineties Marvel books like Power Pack, Green Goblin and Slingers. A++

Nova #1: Nova kicks it into overdrive, because answering all the backlogged Nova Corps distress beacons one at a time is a job for one hundred not one, not that that stops him. Nova trashes baddies all over the galaxy and taxes his body to the very brink. Annihilation was a blast and if all the comics characters were this fun, I’d never read another terrestrial Marvel book. A+

Punisher War Journal #6: Big crazy Nazi runnin’ amok at the Mexican border dressed like reverse Captain America. Can you think of a better way of ticking of Frank Castle cuz I can’t. A+

She Hulk #17: Nick Fury Fembots... I mean LMD’s on the rampage!!! 'Nuff said. B

Spider-Man Back in Black Handbook: I love handbooks. So much useless information about characters very few people remember. This one does have a good article about Spidey’s new powers and how the now defunct Iron Spider armor worked. A

Stormwatch PHD #6: Christos Gage is one of the most underused writers in comics. If you like superheros and cop dramas like "CSI" and "NYPD Blue" you should read this book. So much fun you might go Blind. A+

Tales of the Unexpected #7: I still have trouble caring about the Spectre in this series, but it is more than made up for with the backup "Dr. 13" story. C

Teen Titans #45: Deathsroke vs. Ravager and Jericho? Supergirl vs. Match (a clone of Superboy, who was in turn the clone of Superman). This issue is the big beatdown Titans fans have been waiting for. A+

Thunderbolts #113: Normie Osborn is getting crazier and crazier. Speedball/Pennance gets even more emo and Moonstone reveals her big plan to Swordsman. While this book is not as good as the previous group, I have to admit it is a fun read. The art could use some work and the lightboxing of Tommy Lee Jones for Norman Osborn has to go... along with the cover featuring two characters who aren't even in this issue. Still they have built a team I love to hate. B

Transformers Movie Prequel #3: I can’t wait to see this movie and all the backstory for it has been great so far. Plus you get to see protoform Starscream and his robo-homies hanging out on Mars. B+

Trials of Shazam #6: Freddie Freeman has to spring Hercules from jail for his next trial. Not too hard right? Herc’s there for 14 counts of murder. How hard can it be to get a demigod out of a prison? Judd Winnick’s love of the Marvel family shows through in each issue of this book. Combine that with Howard Porter’s amazing art and you have a first class ticket to the land of amazing. A

Wolverine Origins #13: Why is Cyber back? Why is there so little origin in Wolverine Origins? And the most important Question, why is Wolverine's son named after a bad 80’s metal band? He might as well be named Night Ranger or Whitesnake. If you don’t know what I’m talking about read the last couple of issues and find out. C

Wonder Woman #7: YES!! Wonder Woman is coming out on a regular basis again!!! It’s only been two weeks since the last issue and when I saw that issue seven was coming out this week I thought I was in Bizarro World. Nemesis is awesome in this and seems to be the book’s whipping boy, but I think he likes it... a lot. A+ for story A++ for actually coming out. I can’t wait for Amazons Attack. Who cares about World War Hulk when these crazy babes have the purple death ray. The name alone implies nothing good can come from it.

New X-Men #37: While not a Magik fan nor a Skottie young fan, I found this book to be a good way to catch up newer readers to a character that, in my opinion, should stay dead. B

Uncanny X-Men #485: I hate when the X-men go to space. I hate the Shi'ar. I hate the Starjammers. WHY DO I LOVE THIS STORY????? Oh yeah, 'cuz Vulcan is the best villain since Magneto. He is so convinced that he is doing the right thing. He only sees the world from his view and has no consideration for anything. That’s what makes a good villain. That and the outfit he bought at Billy Batson’s garage sale. Can Ed Brubaker write a bad book? A+

Actually... I can think of a good way to tick him off: 'War journal' Entry - "Whuhhhhhhhh" (ie: Whedon =/= Quality Writing)
