Atomic Comics - So you guys are a rock band – what inspired you to create a comic book?

A Life of Science - It all started off with an album we were writing. We knew we wanted it to be concept based, so we started off with a few scene ideas we had and built it out from there. With each new song, the story started to fill in a bit.

When we started telling friends about the story concept, everyone wanted to know more. The idea to go multimedia with it came up a few times, so we toyed with the idea. When we considered creating a novel, comic book and album to accompany the album, we realized how possible it was. We knew bands like Coheed & Cambria had done the comic book / album combo, but we wanted to take it a little bit further.

AC - You’ve been cruising the comic convention circuit this year … what cool stories do you have from the road?

LS - We actually got to hang out with Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria at Baltimore Comicon. He was premiering his new Kill Audio book, and we got to show him our project and get some feedback. He actually dug it. We were stoked.

We also saw some pretty awesome costumes. Full size Chewbaccas, Predators... Even Powdered Toast Man (From Ren & Stimpy)

The after parties were pretty dope too. Got to hang with actors from Battlestar Galactica and Twilight.

AC - Are all four of you big comic fans, or just one (or more) of you? What are your favorite comics right now?

LS - We've all been into it at some points in our lives. We're from Arizona, so we're definitely Spawn fans. I also really like the Kill Audio book I was talking about earlier. Some of us also like Lady Death, The Uniques... our tastes are kind of all over the place.

AC - What are your inspirations both as a band and as comic fans?

LS - We are big fans of concept-based albums. Bands like The Mars Volta and The Dear Hunter and Coheed & Cambria are creating grandiose forms of entertainment that are on the cutting edge of storytelling. The problem for me is fully understanding the concepts that they attempt to convey. The goal for The Apneist was to create a concept that is fully articulated visually and audibly. We wanted to give full background story and a play-by-play description of what is going on in every moment of the music conceptually. We wanted the listener to get involved with the characters, the story and the music. We wanted to make the most clear and concise concept record we could, and the most direct route was releasing comic books, novels and other supplements to allow the listener to become involved in our world on every level.

AC - What should people expect at the signing at Atomic Mesa this weekend? Going to bust out your famous cover of DeL the Funky Homosapien’s classic: Mr. Dobalina?

LS - Haha we are just looking to come out and have some fun with fellow comic enthusiasts. We will be performing some songs from The Apneist with some of the band members. We might even sneak in some other songs too. We will be signing copies of the album and comic book, answering questions and hanging out. We will also bring our Cornhole set, so challengers can take us on in a game of "Bags." If you can beat us, we will give you a free copy of our album!

AC - How many issues do you expect the Apneist to be when all is said & done?

LS - The Apneist album will have a total of 3 comic books. The second Apneist album (which we are currently working on) will probably have more like 4 or 5. I'd like to keep this as an ongoing series. There doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

AC - So how did y’all come up with the band name?

LS - A Life of Science is an alternate title for the story of The Apneist. Jon Tate, the lead character of the series, does indeed live "a life of science."
