Atomic Comics - So Fearless Dawn … What can you tell us about her?
Steve Mannion - She's the "Chick with the Funny Things on her Head". A friend of mine is daring me to bill her with that tagline. It's pretty serious business. Well, not really. It's a comic! Maybe I'm a bit of a purist like that. Fearless Dawn is just pure comic book fun. If I'm consciously going for anything, that's what I'm going for with the thing. Jim Silke saw the stuff at the San Jose Supercon and he goes, "Good...Good. Just keep her cute and keep her in trouble!!!" I like that.
AC - After reading Issue #1 (which we loved), we can’t help but appreciate the classic pulp style art in the book. How did you come up with the look?
SM - Thank you! Frankly I just kind of do it and it comes out looking like that. I guess I like to look at a lot of old stuff. Old cars, old comics, old radios and stereo systems. That kind of stuff always appealed to me.
AC - Where does an idea like Fearless Dawn come from?
SM - Doodling...She came out... She was easy to do. Like her origin came pretty naturally. Also a lot of the time I'll want to see a comic with this type of stuff going on in it, so I'll start drawing it. Maybe a comic that I enjoy reading is real late so I start drawing one like it! Don't tell anybody that.
AC - For those fans that fall in love with this book, where can they get more information about it?
SM - Well you got the Fearless Dawn blog-http://fearlessdawn.blogspot.com/ And you can look me up, Steve Mannion on Facebook, myspace... atombombcomics.com (That's my crappy little site) and Frank's asylumpress.com are all good places. Fearless Dawn's pretty google-able for reviews and stuff. And THE BOMB Trade paperback is a great place to start! That's got the Fearless Dawn origin story in it.
AC - What exactly does the future hold for Fearless Dawn?
SM - Well in the next issue there's this giant frog see? So there's big trouble there. And then in issue 4 the whole gang goes to Hollywood to wrap up the series and that issue is absolutely horrible! Oh! We have a Free Comic Book Day issue planned... Then there's this wrestling story I got... a Rock and Roll issue: juke joints and such. And a Fantastic 4 kind of spoof in outer space with this dog mascot I'm gonna introduce. That's when the series jumps the shark like Scooby Doo and we gotta introduce these Scrappy Doo type elements to keep it fresh.
AC - Being an indie creator, what advice can you give to those that want to publish their own comics?
SM - Finish it. Even if you get rejected just keep doing it.
AC - Any other projects you have on the burners at the moment?
SM - Sorta. But Fearless Dawn is really going. I'm having a ball with the characters and think it's going to be a really fun comic book. So it's full-steam ahead on Fearless Dawn!
AC - Are you Jim Shooter’s long lost brother?
SM - On my Dad's side there's this Welsh bloodline we can trace. |
