Atomic Comics - So….What’s up with the Mohawk?

Ben Glendenning - Well it’s a long story, My first self-published character "Skulljammer" sported the Mohawk and since I go by that name online I thought I'd try to garner some attention by having the same hair, because I'm one of those type of guys that blends in and everyone forgets. It worked, and over the past five years the Mohawk has been very good to me ....it even gets more screen time than me in Brian Pulido's "the Graves" out in theaters January 29th *plug*plug* plus it allows me to shave off all that grey hair on the sides and hide my true age.

AC - You have a project in the works called Tin Star Tex.  What can you tell us about it?

BG - "Tin Star Tex" creatively is an outlet of all the genres, styles and themes I've always wanted to work with rolled into one. It’s about a time-traveling, dimension hopping Redneck fixing cosmic sized problems with aid from his Tin-Star Quantum computer named "Tinny". Upon first impressions Tex comes off as a big dumb Redneck but one of the main themes of this book is never trust in stereotypes. He IS a big tough redneck with a love for beef jerky and PBR but he's also a genius who understands every facet of human nature and fixes cosmic anomalies as easily as he would fix a flat tire. And all of this of course is sandwiched by massive helpings of all out balls to the wall action!

AC - A time traveling El Camino? Does it have hydraulics?

BG - Tex's Tin-Star quantum computer is the real Time travel device, but Tex's ride of choice is a Black 1972 El Camino which runs on a bosonic engine that Tex affectionately calls "Suzy Q" and it has far cooler gizmos in it than hydraulics....and no, where you’re going...you won’t need roads.

AC - Not only are you working on your own comics but you work on a ton of trading card projects.  Can you tell us about that?

BG - About two years ago a good friend Mark Irwin (inker extraordinaire) was looking for some artists to contribute to the new Marvel Masterpiece's line and I made him look at some Marvel con sketches I posted online and he put me on the set. Luckily for me the trading card fans liked my quirky style on all the Marvel characters and I've been invited back time and time again to contribute. Then just as the MM sets ended a few more companies popped up and offered me more sets. I have a blast working with all the properties and the Card fans are absolutely awesome, so it’s definitely an artistic avenue I plan to stick with for as long as they'll have me. Current sets on the shelves that I've worked on are X-men Archives, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Spider-Man Archives, Mandy, Zombies vs. Cheerleaders, and Greatest American Hero …and in the next few months Moonstone Maximum, Iron-Man 2 and Marvel 70th Anniversary.

AC - Now you will also be signing for the Wolverine 100 project.  How cool was it to be working on that?

BG - VERY Cool! I've been a big fan of the 100 projects since their inception; I absolutely love seeing new artist’s takes on the characters and legendary artists providing raw traditional works. And I've been a big Fan of the HERO Initiative and all it does for our industry, so the opportunity to work up a Wolverine 100 cover was completely nerve wracking and exhilarating all at the same time...I threw up only once though....and no, NOT on the cover.

AC - I noticed that you have also co-hosted the Internets Greatest Comic Book and Geek Culture Program: I Have Issues (www.ihaveissues.tv). What was that experience like?  Was it mind blowing?  Does anything else in your life even compare?

BG - It was kind of like the first day in prison (And I've never been in prison...so thanks for that experience "I have Issues"). I was too afraid to be opinionated and I felt I needed to throw out the crazy-eye to ensure my safety. I think maybe it was host Thomas Healy’s fault for swinging around a soap on a rope before the taping. I need to co-host with Shaun Kronenfeld, I've never witnessed a train-wreck up close.

AC - As someone who is working as an indie creator, what kind of advice can you give someone who is looking to create their own comics?

BG - LOVE Comics and all of its facets or go home because you have to eat, sleep and breathe comics in order to produce a quality product on your own. Be prepared to work 24/7. There are a million other things I could bring up but everything stems from motivation and drive.

AC - So if anyone wants to find out info on you or your projects where on the webnets can they go?

BG - WWW.SKULLJAMMER.COM is where you can find all the latest news and art from me first.
