With the chill of fall nipping, Atomic Comics Chandler Superstore held its second annual Super Villain Day. For those unable to attend this fiendish event, let us regale you with sordid tales of villainy.

Costume contest 1st place winner
Saturday, October 24th… just like any other day, or so one would think. A few hardened criminals from near, far, and even from a “Galaxy Far, Far Away…” converged on Atomic Comics. The infamous list of guests included Harley Quinn, Jason Voorhees, The Black Hand along with Black Lantern Sue Dibney, Mandalorians from the Star Wars Galaxy, Maleficent, and last but not least, everyone’s favorite bad guy, The Joker, who just happened to be on vacation here in Arizona.

364 days of the year, “heroes” get all the praise. This is the one day where Atomic Comics tips its hat to those bad guys who make the heroes look so good. To celebrate this day, Atomic Comics handed out free comic books to every visitor! In addition, several up and coming local artists were drawing free sketches for fans. This talented bunch included Ben Glendenning, Tony Parker, Jim Hanna, Nathan Morris, Denae Frazier and Terry Tibke. Under threat of villainous reprisal, these guys slaved for hours, showing off their talent and providing original souvenirs to all who wished. SVD hosted an art contest for the fans with a gift certificate going to the person who dreamed up and drew the best original villain.

Shortly after the Joker allowed the artist crew to head off into the sunset, Atomic Comics hosted a meet and greet with all the infamous villains. Fans were able to ask questions, take pictures and even have a few laughs, although those who laughed at the Joker and not with him “made the list” as he put it.

Later in the evening, our master of ceremonies, The Joker, MC’d the grand costume contest. Although the day was Super Villain Day, since it’s so close to Halloween, he felt that any costume should be allowed to enter, magnanimous gentleman that he is. Third place went to the evil queen from sleeping beauty, Maleficent with second place taken down by a very cool looking mini-Rorschach. The Grand Prize went to a fantastically heavily armored Mandalorian soldier.

Another great Super Villain Day is in the books with no loss of life or property, so we look forward to next year’s gathering of vile criminals. So start planning those costumes and circle the calendar, for the most infamous day of the year is always Super Villain Day!
