With Johnny and Ben hanging around, is this going to become more of a team book? How does the writing change when you try to fit two more main characters into the stories?

Yes, they are a team... or at least, we see a team being formed. There's a natural fit, but they still have to work out the kinks in the new group dynamic, which is where the fun in writing it comes from.

Several times in the past you've made the point of how important it is to market Black Panther to the black community, but now he and Storm are joining the FF--possibly the most whitebread of all supergroups. What happens when those worlds collide?

Oh, it's lovely. I always loved the FF and that's where the Black Panther first appeared, so it doesn't seem like a "clash" at all to me. I know some folks who read my book are now picking up an issue of the Fantastic Four for the first time in years. Of course, there will be FF readers who will now check out Black Panther for the first time. And there will be folks who don't read either who will give it a peek just to figure out what the heck is going on! What's important to me is readership growth--not just "trading share" from one book to another, but actually growing the market. Events like this, coming on at the same time as the new FF movie, help do that.

How closely are you working with Dwayne McDuffie to coordinate plotlines between Black Panther and FF? How does that process work?

We give each other a general idea of what we're doing and then we write our individual storylines. Then we share to make sure no one is caught off guard.

The relationship between Ororo and T'Challa was based on a story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne from decades ago and the cover of the next issue pays tribute to a classic FF cover. How often do you refer back to old school comics for inspiration?

I have a gi-normous comic book collection, and while I always want my books to be relevant and accessible to a first time reader, like any fan I love "quotes" of memorable moments in comic book history. Most importantly, I try to figure out how I can impact fans the same way I felt when I first read stories by Stan and Jack... or the way I feel when I read Ultimates today.

Between Civil War falling smack in the middle of BP's wedding and now teaming up with the FF, you've had to work your stories around other writers' ideas. Do you enjoy that process or would you prefer to be more independent?

As a writer, it's always easier to not participate in crossovers, but I always felt that hurt previous incarnations of the BLACK PANTHER series. If Black Panther is going to be a major player in the MU, then he's gotta be in the mix.

On a similar note, Black Panther and the FF will be visiting the Marvel Zombie-verse in a few issues. What kind of payback can zombie Hank Pym expect for carving up that universe's T'Challa like a turkey?

I'm not telling.

Which makes you cringe more when it shows up on Comedy Central and why: House Party 2 or House Party 3?

Well, other than them being based on my original film, House Party, I had nothing to do with either film, other than getting a check. I didn't write, produce or direct any of the sequels. The first time I saw House Party 2--on cable, mind you!--it was so horrifying that I've never even seen House Party 3.

So to answer your question, I'm more curious about the third one, because I've never really seen it, but they both make me cringe. Then I think of the money, relax, and watch something on TiVo.

The very fact that he actually gave an honest answer to the House Party question at the end has just caused me to reserve a copy of the next issue of Black Panther.

Well played, Hudlin. Well played.
