Wizard World Los Angeles has come and gone, in fact it has been two weeks since the event, but never let it be said that I’m not timely! Captain America is dead! How’s THAT for breaking news?
Actually, things here have been fairly frenzied getting the van ready to go to Emerald City Con in Seattle, that is, until they pulled the plug on the event. We will still be making it to several cons this year, but many less than we were originally planning on. There is an innate problem with the amount of travel that we put in. There isn’t enough staff back home to cover our shifts so that we can trot the globe. By the time we get back home we are exhausted and looking for a couple of days to recuperate. However, the staff here that has been working double time in our absence is exhausted as well, and it ends up taxing our resources.
We apologize to everybody we were supposed to meet in Seattle. I was looking forward to making my glorious return to the Pacific Northwest and rocking every single bit of Seattle with my Awesome Vibes. To everybody else, make sure that you hit up Seattle next weekend! I can’t say enough good things about the town and the people in it. SO! As an apology, I’ve decided to share some of the highlights from Las Angeles. The con itself is in a pretty cool location, right in downtown L.A. across the way from the Staples Center. As a side note, I cursed Kobe Bryant during a Lakers game and what happened? He dropped like, 60 points a game for four games straight. The moral of the story is that it’s probably my fault that he just had a Michael Jordan like run, and I am sorry.
Our setup was a little different than previous cons since we had a bit more space than the others. We were working in a 20 by 30 foot space as opposed to a 20 by 20 foot. I think the end result was pretty freaking awesome. So cool in fact that Glenn "Mother Lovin’" Danzig swung by and took a couple of pictures with us next to the van. Friday was pretty slow, as per usual with most cons, since everyone is either in school or at work, but Saturday was one of the busiest days we have ever experienced at any con, at any time. We were fortunate enough to have Ed Brubaker sign with us for a couple of hours. For the non-comic book fans out there that don’t know who he is; Brubaker writes X-Men, Daredevil, Criminal, and formerly Dead Enders. He also has been writing Captain America, which is the reason that our day was so busy. The Wednesday before the con, Captain America #25 had come out, which is of course, the death of Captain America.
This gentleman showed up right when the convention opened on Saturday to be first in line for the Brubaker signing. And here he is! First in line! Mission accomplished man, mission accomplished.
The response to Brubaker was mostly positive though several people asked Brubaker why he killed off Cap. It’s obviously very hard when you kill off a character like Captain America, who is a staple of the Marvel Universe, not only a staple, but also a benchmark for all superhero morality within the universe. Captain America is one of the rare characters that transcends his status as ‘character’ and becomes more of a metaphor. He has come to represent ideal American, one who prides himself on hard work and ethics, somebody who holds his or her self to a higher standard than everybody else.
That being said, Captain America is a fictional character, and Brubaker an exceptional writer. I hope that most readers will trust him enough to know when good story will outweigh the consequences of the impact that story will have. Brubaker mentioned that he already has Captain America scripted out for the rest of the year. By the end of the year, I’m sure that most readers will be raving about how good Captain America has been for the past year.
Sunday went back to being pretty slow, but with spurts of frenzy. Julian had a chance to break away and photograph some of the other celebrities who showed up at the con. Paul Reubens was there. Though in what capacity I don’t know. But damn that’s awesome. Zachary Quinto of Heroes fame was there as well. Jeph Loeb stopped by or van for a second. Jeph Loeb is the writer of such classics as Superman for all Seasons and Batman: The Long Halloween. He is also probably one of the most consistent writers in all of comics. His stuff rarely blows me away, but it is always entertaining and well written. J. Scott Campbell also took a picture with the van. He said, "Hey! I drew that!" and pointed to Spider-man. Yes, you did, J. Scott. Now draw him more! In consecutive, sequential art panels that form a story!
And of course there are always the great costumes that we saw. Here are a sample of some of the best. JOIN THE K.I.S.S. ARMY! GLAM ROCK YOUR ENEMIES TO DEEEAAAATH!
Note: you cannot cosplay Gene Simmons tongue. That is a genetic gift handed down from your parents, given to them directly from Satan. Look, it's the three people who actually watched Blade Trinity in the theater!
Julian’s super power? Gettin’ all the chicks! This dude’s mutton chops puts Matt Ralston’s face sprouts to shame! I think this guy resembles Christopher Reeves a bit. Cool classic costume. How friggin’ cool is this guy? Dick Tracy and Superman were the very first comics I ever owned. I thought his costume was the bee’s knees! Oh, you’re going downtown Matt! For having chops inferior to Wolverine! Man, his sideburns are like Ultimate chops and Matt’s are regular Marvel U. all the way. So that is pretty much it for L.A. If I had to sum the entire experience up in one picture, it would be this one. See you all at Anizona!
