Atomic Comics - You have been considered by some, to be one of the great all-time X-Men artists.  Each time you return home, how does it feel?

Marc Silvestri - First off that puts me in some good company so thanks! The X-Men always feel like a happy reunion with an old friend. Wolverine is still one of my all time favs and I’ve always thought The X-Men defined the “team book” concept in general. Plus as Marvel’s flagship franchise outside of Spiderman you can always count on working with the best creative talent.

AC - Do you have any favorite moments from past X-Men stories that have stuck with you?

MS - I loved working with Grant Morrison on “Here comes tomorrow”. That was just page after page of cool crap to draw.

AC - So this is a big deal: Utopia is pretty much the end-all confrontation of the X-Men and the forces of Norman Osborne.  Can you give us a hint of what we can expect?

MS - All I can say is there’s a lot of people running around screaming at each other and making fun of Osborne’s hair.

AC - Any surprise appearances from any characters?  Maybe you sneak the Darkness into a few panels?  Maybe Mighty Malve shows up to teach Osborne a lesson?

MS - The Darkness lurks in every shadow in the book. Don’t tell Marvel.

AC - To quote you: “As you all know the world of comics has officially bent Hollywood over and made its tender backside its prison bitch. Inmate after inmate has invaded its most special place and has it begging for more. Well grit your teeth tinsel town because WITCHBLADE the movie is next in line!” … wow pretty graphic, bro … you got some lingering, unfulfilled fantasies? Anyways, what’s up with the Witchblade movie? Pretty cool you got Michael Rymer on board! Any leads on tap?

MS - Still working on getting the script just so. The material is tricky and we have no interest in shooting the franchise in the foot so we’re gonna make sure we get it right. Despite what people think about how cool something looks its all about the character and their story.

AC - Another big book out now is the Marvel/Top Cow crossover “Fusion”.  This book is sweet.  Is it hard to work out the details when doing inter-company cross-overs?

MS - Crossovers work really well for us so from our perspective its good business. Plus as fans of comics, it’s just flat-out fun to see characters from different companies punch each other in the face. It does require communication and finesse though.

AC - You’re also working on another high profile project at Image, IMAGE UNITED. Spawned from the Free Comic Book Day 2008 Image Founding Father’s at … wait for it … ATOMIC COMICS … what’s the status of highly anticipated series?

MS - Basically, the whole concept of the artist “jam” is being taken to a whole new level. Instead of switching page-by-page you literally have six distinct artistic styles often in the same panel. The idea that each guy is also doing the character(s) he created is pretty unique. I think the fans are going to buy into the fun of it immediately. Plus Robert Kirkman is a hell of a writer.

AC - Wanted 2 was announced last week featuring the return of both original director Stanislovski Blogdonvichiski and more importantly, Angelina Jolie!!! What’s Top Cow’s involvement this time around? Got another series coming out, Millar style?

MS - Rumors, rumors, rumors. Official announcements should be coming soon though. I for one can’t wait to see Wanted 2. And 3 and 4 for that matter! Any new comic series is Mark and JG’s call. I’d read `em!

AC - Marvel’s been sub-leasing some Top Cow talent (e.g. Mike Choi & Tyler Kirkham, etc.) over the past couple years. How do you feel that arrangement has worked out from your & the Cow’s perspective.

MS - It’s good all around. Gives our guys exposure to other audiences (which has readers look back at what we have going on) and gives the artists a chance to work on some iconic characters.

AC -  So when you and Matt Hawkins swing by the Playboy Mansion (we know you have 24/7 access!), as married fellows, do you tell the wives or are you “going to a Lakers game”?

MS - Those days are over for me brother! Oddly, hitting the mansion was one of my goals since I hit puberty (hmmm, imagine that). I went 4 or 5 times, all the big parties. It’s pretty much what you think it is. Good times!
