What can be said about Chandler Atomic Comics first ever Super Villain Day? For starters, it was freaking awesome! For those that were unfortunate enough to miss this great event, here is a little re-cap for the day:

Even though the store opened at 10 am on Saturday, October 18th, Super Villain Day didn’t get started until Noon. It was at this time that we welcomed local artists to the store. The awesome and talented gentlemen that showed up to do sketches were: Ben Glendenning, Jim Hanna, Patrick Scherberger, Tony Parker, and Jonnie Allen. All these comic creators were just as awesome as could be. From 12-4pm, all these gentlemen took their time to draw free sketches for kids 12 and younger and $5 sketches for all others. The donations raised from these sketches went toward the Hero Initiative.

While the sketches were happening in one part of the store, we had a table full of some of the most popular comic book titles available in the back of the store. The best part was that everyone who came in was able to take one home for free. During the first few hours of Super Villain day it was great to see all the families come into the store. Many kids we’re so excited to walk in, get a free sketch, get a comic book, and experience the fun and exciting environment that Atomic Comics offers to the community of Arizona.

If free sketches and free comic books weren’t enough to make it a fun day, we planned on having a couple more really cool events later that night. One of the events that we held was a costume contest. We had 2 categories for the competition. The first category was for 12 and under with the second category being for those 12 and older. The prizes ranged from Gift certificates and stuffed Yoshi dolls to little bags of candy. The biggest prize went to the lady that won our 12 and older category for her amazing Catwoman costume, but this prize was not from us here at Atomic Comics. Her boyfriend actually proposed right here at Atomic Comics. This was an awesome experience for the staff and all those in attendance. I believe that this was an Atomic Comics first… a proposal of marriage in our store. Congratulations to the happy couple.

The other part of Super Villain day started at 5 pm. We made a special call to the one and only Commissioner Gordon of Gotham City, and asked if he would allow some of his most evil villains to come to our store for a visit. With his permission, we hosted The Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, and Hush. The best part was that once the word got out that these villains were showing up, others such as Lobo and Dark Phoenix made an appearance to join in on the fun as well. Customers were able to get their picture taken with their favorite villains of Gotham and their fiendish friends.

All in all it was a very successful day. Everyone had a lot of fun, and we, the staff of Chandler Atomic Comics, look forward to next year's Super Villain Day.
