This week we’re “talking” with William Katt, star of the monster hit 80s TV series The Greatest American Hero and now publisher of new comic company Catastophic Comics. Mr. Katt stopped by two of the Atomic stores this past weekend to meet fans and introduce his new line of comics.

IG: You are known primarily as an actor. What made you decide to jump in the realm of comics?

WK: ‘Mighty Mouse’ and Buster Crabbe’s ‘Flash Gordon’ were a big part of my life prior to puberty – I suppose comic books and spandex were always destined to be in my future.
IG: Everyone has done things they are embarrassed by. Have you ever taken a role or been in a production that afterwards made you say, “What was I thinking?”

WK: That’s exactly what was running through my mind the first time I looked at myself in the mirror dressed in the red tights! Yikes!
IG: Now that you’re a comic book mogul, give our readers an insight into which comics you’re currently reading and excited about?

WK: I’m a big fan of DMZ – I love the way it’s drawn and the stories twist and turn in ways I don’t expect most of the time.

IG: Along those same lines, which comics, historically, serve as your inspiration for Catastrophic Comics? Both in terms of stories and art and feel, and also in terms of how you run and promote the business?

WK: Trying to succeed in the comic book world is as intimidating as a lightning round on ‘Jeoprody’ – we’ve got a lot to learn at ‘Catastrophic Comics’ so our inspiration are those companies that have been around and over the years reinventing themselves and morphing and changing with the times – staying fresh and interesting.
IG: Of all the stars of the classic surf film Big Wednesday, you’ve certainly aged the best! Boy that Busey guy sure fell apart – he looks like a decrepit Mayan temple eh?

WK: A lot of what you see is just his public persona. He’s much worse in private! Seriously – Gary’s a good guy and one of the smartest people I’ve ever met.
IG: You still surf? If so, what’re your thoughts on Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz? If not, what’re your thoughts on Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz?

WK: Hey - the guy’s a Texas boy and works with Kelly Slater – all good in my book.
IG: How was it working with the new generation of hot, up & coming actors in the season premier episode of Heroes?

WK: ‘Heroes’ is my favorite show in the last few years. It was so cool it actually made me freeze up! ( Inside joke if you saw the episode ). LOL
IG: What does the future hold for Catastrophic Comics? How many books would like to see in the stable? How do you go about finding/recruiting new talent?

WK: We still have two more issues of ‘Sparks’ and ‘Greatest American Hero’ starts the end of November. ‘Mythology Wars’ will be released next spring as a monthly book and that’s really about all we can handle right now. I still have to have time to cook dinner for my kids ya know!
IG: We saw Connie Selleca at San Diego Comic Con for your Greatest American Hero panel – she is super hot, yes? What’re your impressions of the experience?

WK: My impression was that Connie Selleca was hot then – and is currently still hot! John Tesh is a lucky man.
IG: Speaking of … who would win in a comic book style battle: Gil Gerard or John Tesh?

WK: John Tesh no question!
IG: The feedback we’ve received about your recent visit to Atomic Comics has been extraordinarily positive! Fans rave about how easy going and friendly you were! You really and truly dig meeting the fans?

WK: Atomic Comic fans are terrific! I think they deserve a free lunch day for their patronage – don’t you? Will that be cash or credit? LOL
IG: So if you’re an actor, you’re a Hollywood, wacko liberal … so you probably want Obama to socialize our entire country and make it illegal not to recycle? Have you considered supporting General Zod as a refreshing alternative to the standard party candidates? http://www.zod2008.com/

WK: I sit on the National Board of Screen Actors Guild and honestly - there are so many wacko liberals with agendas – heck – General Zod might be just the thing for us. Heaven help us all!
IG: We were pleasantly surprised by the depth of mood and feel of the early Sparks issues. What’s the genesis of this title?

WK: We uncovered an old chest in the desert at a former sight of ‘Burning Man’ and that was the only word on the crumbling manuscript inside that we could make out! Naaaaaaa
IG: Dude, Mark Hamill is a punk for stealing your job – what happened there, how could Lucas have given him the Skywalker role? He slept with the producer, right?

WK: Hey Mark’s a good guy – and we both got something out of the deal –Yeah sure he wore a toga - but I took Carrie to the prom and eventually… hey … I got to wear red spandex – so… who got the better of the deal? I’ll let your readers answer that.
IG: How was it working with printers, distributors and reatils to get your first book into the hands of fans?

WK: Diamond has been terrific to work w/ but pales in comparison to the help given by terrific retailers like yourself. And they say I’m not political….. !
IG: Mr. Katt, it’s been a pleasure. We’re all super pumped to see how Catastrophic evolves and diversifies the wonderful comic book industry!

Thanks to you and all the wonderful folks out there that came to say hello. Best. Wm
