So your first time at bat and you hit a home run with the last storyline in Superman Batman! I mean, silver Kryptonite immortalizes you in the halls of sequential art! How does it feel to add to the legacy of Kryptonite?
Michael Green: Thanks for that. I had no idea we were immortalized anywhere. But since my religion frowns on graven imagery, I suppose I should be worried. An angry God is no good for one's sales.
Michael Johnson: My religion's all about graven imagery. It feels fantastic.
Many fans have felt burned when TV writers try their hand at comics (I will not mention names because they know who they are *glares*) While the storytelling by these folks was great, the titles ended up months late; some titles were even abandoned when deadlines could not be met. How do you manage to write so well and have a hit show and put out your book on time? And can you teach others this amazing secret?
MG: I went in to this aware of the bad rap TV writers have in comics, so I made a promise to myself to be a good student about things and mind the deadlines. To wit, I brought in Mike Johnson, who is not only eerily full of amazing ideas every day, but helps shoulder the workload so the homework gets done on time. It's been a blast working with him. And so far, everything's been on time.
MJ: Michael's being very kind, but we do take our deadlines very seriously. The worst sin you can commit is leaving the artist waiting for something to draw. And it helps that Michael has well-nigh impossible energy levels. He is a storytelling machine. Possibly a Cylon. And he is an absolute pleasure to work with.
If you were to worship a false idol, seriously, it would be of a robed Malve cross-legged like a Buddha, right? Right? Or has Loeb tarnished my Image with you guys?
MG: Loeb has many superpowers. Tarnishment ain't one of them. I'd gladly save a stick of incense for ya...
MJ: I haven't met you yet, but you seem nice.
I have been asked by many folks if we will see more references to the WORLD'S FINEST movie in upcoming projects - everyone loves a completely inaccurate biopic! This thing could make both Batman and Superman's lives miserable for years to come. Any plans to elaborate on this?
MG: It hadn't occurred to me... but if you don't mind me stealing your idea... sure!
MJ: It will be playing continuously on a single small Batcomputer screen in the cave in every issue. See if you can find it! That Alfred's so sneaky.
How has it been working with Shane Davis, the next rising superstar artist?
MG: Amazing. Shane is a truly gifted artist, with a unique point of view on every page he draws. His Kryptonite fishmonster is one of my favorite comic pages ever. Joy.
MJ: Shane made us look good in every panel. He brought so much character to both Batman and Superman and added so much emotion to the story. And he can draw anything. His designs for the Lil' Leaguers were so genius that they inspired us to bring the little guys back for more.
It would seem that HEROES has give you the ability to go anywhere in the industry and write whatever you want. Is there any character you are just dying to get your hands on?
MG: Honestly, I'm really happy writing Superman/Batman. It gives us access to all the best toys in the box. And the DC editors (Berganza and Schlagman) are terrific. As a fan I always enjoy when one writer digs into a title and makes it their own. We're hoping to do that here. Plus it's about all I can handle these days. Mike Johnson, on the other hand, is starting to branch out to things far cooler. (Mike -- how's that for a segue?)
MJ: Aww, look at that! That's what you want in a co-writer, folks. My first priority is helping Michael make S/B the best comic book on Planet Earth every month. My second first priority is helping to create the comic book tie-in to the new TV show FRINGE, and my third first priority is to contribute a Superman story to the upcoming DC Halloween Special.
What's next? Seriously: Hottest show on TV, Comic Fame, The slavering hordes of fans at comic con, what are you going to do next? I think the only thing that can top your current stuff is if you become the first comic creator to orbit the earth or if you come to work for Malve.
MG: Uh... you make my life sound a lot cooler than it is. Next for me is a new show for NBC I created, called "Kings." Look for it in the winter. It's taken me off Heroes, but it's a lot of fun. I'm also co-writing a script for the Green Lantern movie with Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti. Once that's done I'm taking a nap.
MJ: What's next for me is stealing a copy of the Green Lantern script. And telling everyone I know to watch KINGS, because it's fantastic.
If you guys have any pictures laying around of you being tortured or in distress please send as it helps to create an Image of you guys being under the whit hot light of Atomic Comics. Any art you want to send of #50 that we can use would be nice as well. MG: I'll take a look -- see what I have on hand. Thanks!
MJ: We had to build bulky suits of armor out of thumbtacks and discarded Mylar Silver Age bags in order to escape our captivity in the Atomic Bunker. Otherwise it's been a pleasure.
