So we finally settled many of the age old questions that have plagued mankind since the advent of the cathode ray tube. Yes, who would win in a bar-fight: the crew of the Enterprise or the crew of the Serenity?

Ok. Maybe this hasn’t plagued mankind but it was a heck of a lot of fun.

The Great Sci-Fi debate at the Metro locale opened with a fight no one was willing to participate in: Malcolm Reynolds vs. Captain James Tiberius Kirk. Even the die hard Trek fans had to say that the old brown-coat would wipe the floor with good ole’ Jim. This was no contest.

Ever onward we progressed into many other topics that raised eyebrows and blood pressure, building to the ultimate nerd climax…which we will get to later.

After the landslide victory of Mal, we progressed onto other great topics, like the Technological Superiority of the Warp Drive over the Hyperdrive 9. Both sides presented amazing compelling arguments that almost led to a draw, but in the end the final vote was cast in favor of the Hyperdrive in Star Wars, as it led to less mucking about with the laws of space-time and reality.

Other fun topics included the giant monster bash between the Cloverfield monster versus Godzilla and the heated argument over air superiority with the Galactica taking on a Star Destroyer.

But really the highlight was the final argument over which was superior: Star Trek or Star Wars. This fight could have led to bloodshed had it not been for the “NO BLASTERS” sign on the front door. Both sides led strong cases with arguments based in science, technological influence, social issues, and who had cooler action figures. But when it came down to the audience casting their votes…The Force was on the side of George Lucas and company.

While everyone enjoyed the debate, the real highlight of the day was the trivia contest to decide who was the greatest of the geeks with a quiz that left no stone of television and motion picture science fiction unturned. Everything from Alien Nation to Zardoz was covered in the quiz designed to stretch every brain cell in that wonderful “wait, wait I know that one” way. Due to budgetary constraints, I was not allowed to construct a massive hundred foot tall game show set equipped with buzzers, lights, new cars, whammies and Vanna White ….so we brought Nerf guns. YES. You had to answer questions HAN SOLO style!! The first to draw and shot their Nerf Gun was the one who got to answer.

After ten rounds of heated competition, no one seemed to prove worthy to unseat Wes Hart, who won the competition and the title of UBERGEEK, along with a $25.00 gift certificate to Toy Anxiety and a lovely handmade trophy.

All in all everyone who came had a blast and no one got hurt. During the final debate there were a few tense moments, but when it came down to it, everyone was there to share a common love of the entire science fiction genre.
