Dark Horse Entertainment President Mike Richardson is producing a live action feature film based on the character of Emily the Strange, an iconic figure created by designer/skateboarder Rob Reger. Reger first fashioned the character in the early 1990s and the pint-size Goth girl with her four cats was a huge hit on t-shirts, skateboards and stickers before Dark Horse began publishing an Emily the Strange comic and Toynami produced a series of Emily the Strange figures in 2005. Fox had also announced plans to make an Emily the Strange live action movie in 2005 (“Fox Prepping ‘Strange’ Brew”), but let the option lapse. The current Emily the Strange project is not yet set up at a studio, though Universal has first dibs on all Dark Horse projects.
Although the plot for the new film is being kept under wraps, it will be an origin story that explains both the attitudes of the stark and sullen 13 year-old and her four cats, the troublemaker Sabbath, the scheming NeeChee, the highly imaginative Miles, and the enigmatic leader of the group, Mystery. The origin saga that forms the basis for the movie will also provide the material for an Emily the Strange Y.A. novel that HarperCollins will publish in 2009.

| Hi Jake. I think Emily will make a great movie!! Hope it comes to fruition. What does Y.A. stand for in your comment about a novel? Young Adult, maybe? |
