This is a really huge week and so I am gonna keep my in initial rant to a minimum. Did anyone notice my last two reviews were not posted? Anyone? I ran a little late on them and I think they got a little lost in the shuffle. No big. This week is awesome and I shall rant a bit extra on the books to make up for my missing weeks. If any of you want to massage my ego and acknowledge the fact that you read this post, SUIT UP on the Atomic Blog on the subject Anyone reading my reviews?
Pick of the Week
GI Joe: Storm Shadow #1: Man, was this ever cool. Larry Hama writes a rockin’ espionage story fulla Storm Shadow whuppin' bad guys. Some may complain that he was not in costume, but that was awesome. He looked like Bruce Lee in his awesome white jumpsuit. And for those who question why he always wears white, it’s to give you a sporting chance before he kills you. That’s right, he’s that good. Storm Shadow has always been one of my favorite characters whether Joe or Cobra. I think he was the only good toy to come out of the Ninja Force set (Slice and Dice were lame and so was blue and grey Snake–Eyes). I have been waiting for this book for what seems like forever. You don’t even need to know much about the other series to enjoy this. Just pick it up and give it a spin. I think that you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. A++
Action Comics #849: Can Fabian Nicieza be the new regular writer on this book? Seriously, I have loved all the stuff he has done on this book. I think he is just what the doctor ordered. Not that I don’t love Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, but I have commented many times on the punctuality of Nicieza and his ability to craft a great story. This little two issue arc has brought up many things that I don’t think are brought up enough in Superman. Crisis of faith happen to everyone, why would the Man of Steel be excempt? He has fought at the side of gods and angels so were does he stand on the personal beliefs? Muchos kudos to Fabian. Is this the first step to him jumping ship and joining the DC Nation? A+
All Star Batman and Robin #5: Yes, it is finally here and was in no way shape or form worth the wait. It’s official. I hate Frank Miller and Jim Lee ain’t scorin’ any points with me either. Between lateness and general crappiness this book has just pushed me to the point where I do not want to see Frank Miller’s name on any other comic book. D
Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #52: Black Manta has declared Sub Diego his in the absence of Aquaman and is ready to face off with him, only to discover he got the wrong one. How embarrassing. This book is still amazing and I think it is a nice change from the norm. A
Batman #665: I am very confused by the events of this book, but I have faith that Grant Morrison will make all things clear or at least translucent by the next 2 issues. In the mean time it was one hundred percent better than All Star. B
Cable Deadpool #40: This is one of those Cable-heavy issues that is not as fun but is needed to tie-in the fact he has been flying around in a big Helicarrier thing with Rogue and her jerks. How many Helicarriers are flying around the Marvel Universe right now anyway? How hard is it to get one? It seems like everyone is getting them this year. Do they come in some superhero happy meal? Back on track, this issue is literally cable walking down a hallway for 20 pages. Almost as exciting as it sounds. Cable walking mind you, not even running. Walking. C-
Checkmate #14: CHECKOUT part 3. The Outsiders and Checkmate invade Oolong Island with mixed results. Not much else to say. B+
Countdown #50: Jimmy Olsen, ace reporter, on the loose through the DCU. Tracking down Red Hood and breaking the news of the death of the Joker’s Daughter to the joker. This book is going to get more and more interesting as the week’s go by. I can’t wait. Thank god for the myspace preview pages that are being posted. A
Fables #61: Flycatcher prepares his one man war against the Adversary and his hordes. The one truly innocent Fable has finally had enough. Yet another amazing issue of this book. I don’t think that this book has had a bad issue. B+
Fallen Son: Death of Captain America: "Bargaining." I have really enjoyed this series, but I wish it was a weekly. It seems to drag out this event way longer than needed. It makes me feel like it’s dragging down Marvel’s already lagged timetable even further. We knew the events of this book would not stick as soon as the big reveal was shown because we all read last week’s New Avengers. Still, it was a good read and a fun story. A
Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #12: The Rogues vs the new Flash (no... the other new one). I think the most interesting thing about any Flash ongoing series is the fact that the Flash is kinda boring and the Rogues really make the book. B
Gargoyles #4: Gargoyles + costume party = fun. This issue was a big game of “let’s tick off my ex” as Goliath and Eliza both bring their new dates to the party. Awkward fun had by all. B
General Jack Cosmo Presents #1: This book features Hadrian Hillard: Gentleman Barbarian. He could be one of my new favorite ridiculous characters. Seriously. He’s amazingly awesome. A
Justice League of America #9: ACK!!! GORILLA CITY!!!! I LOVE GORILLA CITY!!!!!
Moon Knight #10: I think the covers for this book are one issue ahead of themselves. This issue is full of the Punisher while he was featured on last month’s cover only appeared on one page (the last one). This month, Midnight is on the cover, but is only really on the last page. It doesn’t really matter since I am one of the only people who seems to remember this dork anyway. Yet another thrilling tale of Mope Knight. D
Sidekick #5: Paul Jenkins is a twisted little man and I love him for it. A
Supergirl #17: I have not enjoyed reading the last two or so issues, but I like to look at them. Ale Garza is a good choice of artist I think and has a promising future in the industry. B
Ultimate Spider-Man #109: Kingpin totally owns Spider-man. The traitor is revealed. And Doctor Strange scores. A
Ultimate X-Men #82: Ultimate Morlocks? Was that really needed? Is Bishop making ultimate X-Force? I think so. Kirkman has often professed his love of Liefeld and this just sounds like the beginning of the most extreme of the X-groups. B
Ultimates 2 #13: Was the huge gatefold really needed? Come on. The annual came out like 6 months ago so we all know how this was gonna end. Lame, lame, lame. I enjoyed bits of it but on the whole, it left me cold. Someday Millar will make an effort not to disappoint me. I think Marvel is giving this guy way too much credit. His best work ever was Aztek: The Ultimate Man for DC years ago. I do like the fact that he really cleaned the slate for Jeph (Commmando) Loeb and Joe Mad to do whatever they want. The million dollar question is... What can they do to top this story and the last one? Seriously. How many other major world invasions and armies of gods can they stop? Baron Zemo and ultron kinda don’t measure up to that do they? C
Uncanny X-men #486: Final Showdown between Shi'ar and X-men. Vulcan vs Havoc. Gladiator vs Warpath. Buncha alien jerks vs the Starjammers? This shakes up the X-men in typical X-men way. In other words THEY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME... again. Can everyone just go back to Earth now, please? I really enjoyed this story, but, man, do I want them to get back to good ol’ Terra Firma. X-MEN DO NOT BELONG IN SPACE!!! THAT”S WHY YOU HAVE THE AVENGERS!!! Overall, a good story that I enjoyed even though I hate X-men in space, The Shi'ar, and the Starjammers. It’s amazing I read this at all? B+
X-Factor #19: Kinda left with the feeling that Marvel might be overburdening Peter David and this is what happens. Not all out failure but work just barely not quite up to par. This issue just felt...well... lacking something and I don’t really know what it was. B
