Wizards of the Coast vs McCain: Round 2

Wayne Charness, Senior Vice President at Wizards of the Coast parent Hasbro, has fired off a letter of protest to Michael Goldfarb, the aide to presidential candidate John McCain who disparaged Dungeons and Dragons players on multiple occasions. The letter points out the many military personnel who play D&D (important because one of the Goldfarb barbs says it may be “typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons and Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement”), and asks that Goldfarb not make any more “condescending comments about D&D.”

'Preacher' Defrocked

Mark Steven Johnson, the writer of the Preacher TV series for HBO, told Comics Continuum that the project is dead due to content issues. Johnson told the site “the new head of HBO felt it was just too dark and too violent and too controversial.”

Iron Man and Wolverine in a Mad House!

Marvel Entertainment announced today that anime powerhouse Madhouse will produce four new anime series featuring adapted Marvel characters, including Wolverine and Iron Man, for the Japanese market. Madhouse will adapt the look of the characters to fit the anime style, and the stories, including the characters’ backstories and histories, will be adapted to incorporate Japanese culture and history...

Robert Downey Jr looooves DC Comics

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. panned Dark Knight and threw in an expletive for DC Comics fo r good measure, in an interview with Moviehole recently. “Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy,” he said. “You know what? @%&# DC Comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”

Virgin no more!

Virgin Comics, the high-profile 2006 international joint venture between Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and the India-based comics publisher Gotham Entertainment, has been shut down. The company’s New York office and publishing unit has been closed and the eight people that staff it have been laid off.

DC Movie News!

Warner Brothers has started to reveal the results of its powwow on comic movies (see “DC, Warner Mull Movies”); it would like to have two DC movies among the six to eight “tentpole” movies a year it hopes to release by 2011, according to the Wall Street Journal. This is part of a larger strategy by the studio to cut the number of releases and focus on fewer, bigger movies. In the wake of the success of Dark Knight, it also plans to focus on the evil side of the DC superheroes, including Superman, studio chief Jeff Robinov told the Journal.

'Death Note II' on 400 Screens

Viz Pictures has announced that the second Death Note live action movie, Death Note II: The Last Name, will be shown in nearly 400 U.S. theaters in a two night special event on October 15th and 16th, in association with NCM Fathom. The special theatrical event tops by almost 100 theaters the similar screening of the first live action Death Note film (see “Death Note Gets Theatrical”http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/12392.html), which was shown in around 300 theaters in May.

War Heroes Tour of Duty Signing!

Eight stops in fortnight in multiple countries … the War Heroes Tour 2008 has taken comic superstars Mark Millar and Tony Harris on a rollercoaster ride the likes of which only U2 could relate. The most important and best tour stop ever, including the critically acclaimed U2 shows, was the Chandler Arizona stop at Atomic Comics on Wednesday August 20th.
